A woman was taken to hospital after an incident involving one of Basildon Council’s bin lorries on Chapel Street, Billericay, on Tuesday 6 October. Essex Police is investigating.
What the council says
Basildon Council published a statement on its own website on Tuesday. It confirmed that emergency services attended “an incident involving one of the Council’s refuse collection vehicles and a member of the public in Chapel Street, Billericay, at approximately 1pm today.”
The council said:
- Essex Police, the East of England Ambulance Service and the air ambulance attended
- the area was cordoned off while emergency services responded and carried out their enquiries
- refuse collection supervisors and its Corporate Health and Safety Manager went to the scene
- support has been given to council staff involved in and affected by the incident
It is supporting the police investigation into the circumstances. It said it would be “inappropriate to comment further at this stage” while enquiries continue.
Cllr Andy Barnes, the council’s leader, said: “Our thoughts are with the member of the public involved in this incident and their family at this difficult time.”
He added: “We are working closely with Essex Police and supporting their investigation. As enquiries are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
What the ambulance service says
The East of England Ambulance Service gave a statement to the BBC. It said it was called “just before 13:55 BST to a medical emergency on Chapel Street, Billericay.”
Two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance attended. “A woman was transported by road to the Royal London Hospital for further treatment,” the service said.
The ambulance service has not said what her injuries are or how she is.
