Basildon collects rubbish, food, plastics and card every week. Only glass is fortnightly. Your bin day, the bank holiday rule, garden waste at £50 and the tips.

Most councils collect the black bin one week and the recycling the next. Basildon does not. Since the service changed in April 2025, the black bin, the food caddy, the white plastics bag and the blue paper bag all go out every week. The only container on a fortnight is the orange glass box.

That catches people out in both directions. Newcomers put the recycling out fortnightly and it piles up. Long-term residents still expect an alternating week that no longer exists.

Below is what goes in each container, the honest answer on bank holidays, this year’s garden waste and bulky waste prices, and the two tips, which have completely different rules from each other.

Basildon Borough Council collects the bins. Essex County Council runs one of the two recycling centres and the borough runs the other, which is why the links on this page point at three different websites.

Everything must be at the boundary of your property by 7.30am on collection day. The council is explicit that only waste fully contained inside the black wheeled bin is collected, so anything stacked on the lid or beside it stays put. Flats on communal collections use grey-lidded, blue-lidded and red-lidded bins instead.

Two details worth knowing:

  • Side cardboard is collected if it is broken down and left next to the blue bag (paper and card).
  • Aerosols go in the white bag, not the black bin, including deodorant, hairspray and air freshener (plastics and cans).

Where the council’s own pages contradict each other

The food waste page lists pet waste in both columns. It appears at the end of the “bread and pastries” line under Suitable For, and again as its own entry under Not Suitable For. The Not Suitable entry is the unambiguous one, and Essex sends kerbside food waste to anaerobic digestion, so keep pet waste out of the green caddy.

The council also prices food waste bags twice. The containers page says £3.00 a roll at a library or the Basildon Centre. The council’s own Schedule of Fees and Charges 2026-27 sets caddy liners at £3.70 for a roll of 50 from 1 April 2026, up from £3.50. The fees schedule is the document that was actually approved.

Every household gets two rolls of blue bags and two rolls of white bags free twice a year, and one roll of food waste bags free once a year. Extra bags are free to collect from Barleylands Depot, the Basildon Centre or your local library.

Finding your collection day

The council has no printed calendar. Everything runs through the Where I Live postcode lookup, which also handles missed collections, container requests, bulky bookings and the garden waste subscription. There is also an “Our Streets Basildon” app.

Bank holidays: Basildon does move collections

This is the one most councils answer badly, and Basildon does not answer it on its service pages at all. The commitment is buried in clause 3.8 of the garden waste terms and conditions:

Collections will be changed due to Bank Holidays, seasonal holidays and some unforeseen circumstances.

So unlike neighbouring authorities that collect straight through, Basildon does shift rounds around bank holidays. What it does not do is publish the changes in advance anywhere you can bookmark. The same clause says residents are told through the Where I Live lookup and the Our Streets app, and nowhere else.

The practical answer is that there is no calendar to check in August for December. You check the lookup in the week itself.

The council will also move the start time in a heatwave. In August 2026 it brought collections forward to 6.30am on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 August, with the notice appearing only on the postcode lookup.

Garden waste: £50, and two numbers that do not match

Garden waste is a paid subscription running 1 April to 31 March. It is not pro rata: whenever you join, it ends on 31 March.

  • £50.00 for the first container for 2026/27
  • £50.00 for each additional container
  • A partial year subscription from October to March costs 50% of the annual price, which the main subscription page does not mention (clause 1.5.3 of the terms)
  • Collections are weekly
  • There are no automatic renewals, and only bins showing the current year’s permit sticker are emptied

The fees schedule confirms £50 with a nil increase on 2025/26, and records a new nil charge for a second bin for residents receiving a discretionary council tax award.

Two figures on the council’s own pages disagree, and both matter:

  • How many bins. The subscription page says a maximum of 10 containers per address. Clause 1.8 of the terms says 9.
  • The Christmas break. The subscription page says the service is suspended for 3 weeks over Christmas and New Year, dates to be confirmed. Clause 1.6 of the terms says six weeks “during and following the Christmas period”.

A three-week difference in a paid weekly service is not a rounding error. Until the council publishes dates, treat the winter gap as unresolved.

Compostable sacks are no longer collected. Only the council’s wheeled bin is emptied. If a bin is missed after being presented properly, the council aims to return within two working days, and issues no refunds for missed collections.

Bulky waste: £30, and the price page is out of date

The bulky waste service is £30 for 1 to 5 items.

The booking page says that charge “apply from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026”, which as of today has expired. It has not been updated. The 2026-27 fees schedule confirms the charge is unchanged at £30 for 2026/27, recorded as a nil increase.

The schedule also records a change the web page does not mention: the 6 to 10 item tier has been removed for 2026/27 to support booking system changes. Five items is now the cap per booking.

Items must be at your normal collection point by 7.30am on the day. Putting them out without a booking, or leaving them on the pavement, is treated as fly-tipping and carries a £200 penalty. You can amend or cancel online up to two working days before.

The council will not take fixtures and fittings, bathroom suites, internal or external doors, paint, car batteries, sheet glass, tiles, tree stumps, fence panels, gas cylinders, oil, tyres, builders’ waste or anything waterlogged.

Before paying, the council points to two free routes: the Lighthouse Furniture Project for reusable furniture with its fire label attached, and Anglo Doorstep Collections for clothes, books, kitchenware and small electricals.

Missed collections

Report through the Where I Live lookup or the Our Streets app. The council publishes no deadline for reporting a missed general collection. The only stated turnaround anywhere is in the garden waste terms, where the council undertakes to return within two working days.

A bin left out with the wrong items in it will not be emptied, and will not be collected early once you have fixed it. It waits for the next scheduled day.

The two recycling centres, which work differently

The borough is served by two tips with different operators and different rules. Turning up at the wrong one in the wrong vehicle is the common mistake.

Barleylands, Billericay (run by the borough)

  • No booking. Turn up within opening hours.
  • February to October: 9am to 4.30pm weekdays, 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday
  • November to January: 9am to 4pm, every day
  • Open on bank holidays. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day; closes at 2.30pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve
  • Last admission is five minutes before closing
  • There is a 2-metre height barrier. Open-backed trucks and vans are not allowed in at all

The council’s Barleylands page still carries a notice about resurfacing disruption “from Monday 8th June 2026 for approx 8 weeks”. That eight weeks has now passed, but the notice has not been taken down.

Pitsea (run by Essex County Council)

Textiles, and the collection nobody knows about

Basildon has a kerbside textiles collection that most residents never use. It is run by Essex Textiles, not the council, and you request the blue plastic bags directly on 0800 787 9071 or through the textiles page.

It takes clothing, clean underwear, paired shoes, hats, scarves, gloves, leather clothing, blankets, towels and bed linen. It will not take wellington boots, slippers, pillows, duvets, bric-a-brac or badly soiled clothing.
