Basildon Today is an independent news and information site for the borough of Basildon. We take our facts from public records, we link to every one of them, and we are not connected to the council.
Where we cover
Basildon itself, with Laindon, Pitsea, Vange, Langdon Hills, Noak Bridge and Steeple View, then Billericay and Wickford, which are older towns with their own identities and a good deal more money, and the smaller places around them such as Bowers Gifford and Crays Hill. Nearly 193,000 people live in the borough. We name the actual town in every story, because “Basildon borough” covers places that do not think of themselves as Basildon at all.
How we report
Everything begins with a named source and carries a link to it: Basildon Borough Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the area, and company filings in The Gazette. Essex County Council is responsible for roads, schools and social care rather than the borough, and we say which body a decision came from. Where a record is unclear we say it is unclear rather than filling the gap.
What happens in 2028
Basildon Borough Council is due to be abolished in April 2028 and replaced by a new South West Essex authority covering this borough together with Thurrock. Basildon is the larger of the two partners. We will report each stage from the published documents and keep the practical pages on this site pointing at whichever authority is actually responsible.
