The first Your Billericay Community Parade sets off at 11am on Sunday 13 September. The High Street shuts to traffic until 8pm, with 20 groups walking.

Billericay High Street will close to traffic on Sunday 13 September for the town’s first community parade. The parade sets off at 11am, and the road stays shut until 8pm while the fun day that follows it runs on the street itself (Your Billericay).

It is organised by Your Billericay, the town’s business improvement district, which is funded by a levy on local businesses.

The practical detail

  • Sunday 13 September, parade from 11am, the day runs “till late”
  • the parade goes down the High Street, then turns and returns to finish in the Iceland car park
  • the High Street is closed to traffic until 8pm
  • free face painting, balloon modelling, close-up magic, stilt walkers, roller skaters, Punch and Judy, live music and a family community trail
  • shops, cafes and restaurants run their own activities rather than external traders being brought in: children’s discos, mocktail making, arts and crafts, garden games and cupcake decorating

The organisers make a point of the last one. As they put it, “our cafes, restaurants, shops and local businesses will be taking centre stage”.

It is the start of an autumn programme

The parade is the first of six events the BID has scheduled between September and Christmas.

The BID also lists a Community Awards programme running from September to November, with no fixed date published yet.

What it means for you

  • If you drive through the High Street on a Sunday, do not on 13 September. It is shut to traffic from before the 11am start until 8pm, which is most of the day.
  • Parking is free at weekends in all six of Basildon Borough Council’s car parks. In Billericay that means High Street, at the rear of Iceland, CM12 9AT, with a four-hour maximum stay; Radford Crescent opposite the station, CM12 0DR; and Lake Meadows, CM12 0DT. Note that the parade finishes in the Iceland car park, so expect the High Street one to be busy. Tariffs and terms are on our Basildon roadworks, parking and travel page.
  • Coming by train, Billericay station is a short walk from the High Street. Check services first: the line through Wickford was still closed on 19 August, and our trains to London page has times and fares for all five borough stations.
